8 pilot regions officially rewarded at the Alpine Conference

On the occasion of a rewarding ceremony organised by the French presidency of the Platform “Ecological network” of the Alpine Convention the 8th March 2011 in the frame of the XIth Alpine Conference that took place in Brdo pri Kranju (Slovenia) 8 alpine regions have been officially recognised and rewarded for their exemplary work aiming at the creation of an alpine ecological network. Among these regions that have received a diploma in order to honour their efforts in improving ecological connectivity and implementing in that way article 12 of the Nature Protection protocol of the alpine Convention are also 5 pilot regions that are partners of the Econnect project. The handing over of the rewards happened in a festive atmosphere with some prominent guests such as the German State Secretary for Environment. The Alpine Conference was also the occasion of the transfer of the presidency of the Platform from France to Germany.     

The 8 pilot regions for ecological connectivity of the Alpine Convention (from south-west to north-east):

- South-western Alps (National parc Mercantour/Nature parc Alpi Marittime
- French department Isère
- Transboundary ecoregion Gran Paradiso - Mont Avic - Mont Emilius
- Ecoregion Alpe Veglia ed Alpe Devero
- Rhaetian triangle (Engadin/Southtyrol/Trention/Tyrol)
- Transboundary region Berchtesgaden - Salzburg
- Transboundary ecoregion Alpi Giulie
- Northern Limestone Alps region

Rewarding ceremony for pilot regions at the XIth Alpine Conference in Brdo (Slovenia)

The French presidency of the Platform “Ecological network” of the Alpine Convention will organise a side event for the pilot regions of the alpine ecological network in the frame of the XIth Alpine Conference in Brdo (Slovenia) on Tuesday 8th March 2011. This event that will take place in the congress centre of Brdo, will be the occasion to congratulate these regions for their exemplary work in the field of improving ecological connectivity and to honour their concrete contribution to the implementation of the Alpine Convention (specially the nature protection protocol). The Conference will also be the occasion to report to all alpine ministers the progress achieved by the Platform in the past two years and to hand the presidency of the Platform over to another contracting party.

European Commission Conference on Green Infrastructure implementation in Brussels

The European Commission is organizing a conference on the implementation of Green Infrastructure in Brussels on November 19, 2010. The conference is a follow-up to the March 2009 workshop "Towards a Green Infrastructure for Europe", where a specific definition was achieved for this concept. The upcoming conference is intended to further develop the implementation of the Green Infrastructure concept in the EU. Issues to be addressed in depth include identifying implementation gaps, links to the climate change agenda, and the exchange of best practices reflecting progress being made on the ground, all of the above against the backdrop of the important contribution green infrastructure can make to biodiversity and broader economic and social objectives. Mr. Marco Onida, Secretary General of the Alpine Convention will be present at the conference with a presentation of the contribution of the alpine and Carpathian activities on ecological connectivity to the implementation of a European green infrastructure.

Side event on Mountain Biodiversity at the COP 10 in Nagoya, Japan (27.10.2010)

The Alpine Convention together with a broad range of partners in the context of the Mountain Partnership is co-organising a side-event on mountain biodiversity during the high-level segment of the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) in Nagoya, Japan. The main objective of this event is to raise the awareness of mountain biodiversity on the political agenda. In particular, it aims at presenting and promoting existing mechanisms of regional cooperation such as the Alpine and Carpathian Conventions and their cooperation like it has been done with the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Alpine Convention and the Carpathian Convention.

6th meeting of the Platform Ecological Network and international exchange with the Carpathians

The 6th meeting of the Platform Ecological Network took place in the frame of a broader international event bringing together experts in the field of ecological connectivity from the Alps and the Carpathians. This event was organized in the frame of the Memorandum of Cooperation that has been signed by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Alpine and the Carpathian Convention. Besides presentations on current activities aiming at the creation of large scale ecological networks in both mountain ranges it was an opportunity to discuss future cooperation possibilities on this topic and to exchange experiences.
