Project on the nomination of Pilot Regions

Protected areas and their surroundings are central for the establishment of an ecological network. In fact, they are the nodes in the net. Therefore the Platform “Ecological Network” aims to identify and nominate pilot regions, consisting of protected areas and their surrounding regions. These regions could serve to demonstrate innovative measure and to motivate other regions to get engaged in ecological networking. Being a nominated region could have several marketing and advertising advantages.

A nomination concept was developed as part of an R&D project, supported by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation. To broaden the network, the concept proposes to nominate more pilot regions in two year intervals.

The final report of the R&D-Project describes the nomination procedure. In the annex it includes the questionnaire interested regions need to compile, detailed explanations on this questionnaire and illustrates the benefits a region can get from the nomination. This annex is available in the German version and in French, Italian and Slovenian.
